Innovation and Technology Advisory
Innovation and technology advisory insists that the business problem is named before a tool is bought. In many organisations digital work starts with a software catalogue and leaves integration, data quality, security and user habit until later. That order should be reversed. First we write which decision will become faster, which cost will fall and which risk will rise. Only then is technology chosen. Otherwise the investment simply automates the old process at a higher price.
The service is for companies renewing an ERP or core system, moving customer channels online, building a warehouse or analytics layer, increasing outsourcing, or repairing architecture after a cyber incident. The surface need differs across manufacturing, trade, services and financial institutions. The shared problem is the same: systems do not talk, access lines scatter, and reports arrive late and in conflict. Management is then looking for a working architecture, not “another application”.
The work begins with the application inventory, the integration map, the access matrix, outage logs and total cost of ownership. Shadow spreadsheets, repeated manual loads and tasks that depend on one person are a risk list of their own. Short workshops with users show what the official process document does not say. A roadmap built without that discovery looks like a vendor presentation. It does not look like the institution.
The scoring criteria stay simple: business impact, data maturity, security, lock-in, transition cost and the pace the internal team can carry. Each candidate is scored against those criteria. The newest option does not automatically win. The option the organisation can digest in twelve months does. We prefer staged transitions that show value early over a single big-bang cutover. Management can then cancel a later phase with something already learned.
The deliverable is not a slide deck. It includes a target architecture, a phase plan, a data-ownership table, access principles, a test and rollback scenario, and a budget range. The board receives the investment case, the executive team receives the work breakdown, and the technology team receives the constraints. Service levels and exit clauses needed by procurement and legal are added to the same file. The project is then designed for the day it is run, not only the day it is signed.
The human side decides more projects than the technology does. If training, the simplification of access and the date on which the old system will be switched off are not discussed early, users bypass the new screen. We do not dismiss that resistance as “culture”. We explain it with workload and incentives and put it inside the plan. If sponsor visibility, the project manager’s authority and business ownership are not written down, a technically correct project still fails to live.
Security and personal data are not brakes on innovation. They are arrival conditions. Unauthorised access, missing logs, production data used in testing, or an unmonitored supplier can erase the first gain of digitalisation in a single incident. Architecture choices and cyber or privacy controls therefore move in the same iteration. “Go live first, secure it later” is not a path this service accepts.
Timing should follow the budget cycle and operating peaks. Changing a core system in high season, migrating data during a reporting close, or binding the firm to a vendor with no exit are common and expensive mistakes. An early feasibility study can remove most of them. A late feasibility study often does little more than legitimise a vendor already chosen.
In short, innovation and technology advisory exists to put speed, control and learning on the same plan. We do not aim to make the organisation look digital. We aim to help it decide better. An independent view may be less glossy than a vendor promise. It produces fewer surprises on the day of transition. What we leave is not a software name, but a transformation file management can follow. The file is kept simple enough to be updated in the same language in the second year.
